Privacy Policy
This policy explains what personal data Ambo MCQ ("we", "us") collects, why, and what rights you have under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). Ambo MCQ is the data controller for the personal data described here.
1. Data We Collect
We collect the information you provide when registering (name, email address and password, which is stored only in hashed form) and your quiz activity (questions attempted, answers selected, scores) so the app can show your progress.
If you use the Pro social features, we also store your friend connections, the quiz results you choose to share, challenges you send or take part in, and your chat messages. If you subscribe to Pro, our payment provider processes your payment; we receive your subscription status but never see or store your card details.
2. How We Use Your Data
Your data is used to operate your account, save your quiz history, provide the friends, sharing, challenges and chat features, manage your subscription, and — only with your consent — understand aggregate usage through analytics cookies.
We keep a record of sign-in and sign-up attempts, including the email address and name entered, whether the attempt succeeded and why not if it didn't, IP address and browser, for security purposes and to fix problems with signing up. Your password itself is never recorded.
We also use your email address to send you emails, as described in section 4.
Our legal bases are: performing our contract with you (running your account and the features you use, and sending the account security emails you need to use it); our legitimate interests in keeping the service secure and preventing abuse, and in keeping you informed about the service you use through the update emails described in section 4, which you can opt out of at any time; and your consent (analytics cookies), which you can withdraw at any time using Cookie Settings in the footer.
3. Friends, Sharing, Challenges and Chat
These Pro features only work between people who have both agreed to be friends. Nobody can search for you or see anything about you unless you are friends. Your friends can see your display name and anything you choose to share with them or send them.
When you share a quiz result, your friend sees the summary, or the full review if you choose to include it. You can unshare at any time. In a challenge, your score is shown to the other players once results are revealed. Players who aren't your friends see you only as one of the challenger's friends, never by name.
Chat messages are stored on our servers so your conversations are there when you come back. Only you and your friend can see them in the app, but they are not end-to-end encrypted, so please don't share sensitive personal or patient information in chat. If you unfriend someone, your conversation is hidden from both of you; it isn't deleted, and it reappears if you become friends again.
We don't routinely read your messages or shared content. We may access them only where necessary to investigate a report of abuse or a breach of our Terms & Conditions, to keep the service secure, or where we are required to by law (for example, a valid request from An Garda Síochána). Remember that anything you send or share can be copied or screenshotted by the person who receives it.
4. Emails We Send
We send two kinds of email to the address on your account, and only once it has been verified.
Account security emails. These are the emails you need to use your account safely, such as verifying your email address and resetting your password. We always send these when they are needed, and they can't be turned off.
Updates, news and announcements. From time to time we'll email you about system updates, news and announcements, for example when we add new question categories or new questions to existing categories. We send these only occasionally, we don't send advertising for other companies, and we never give your email address to anyone else to send you theirs.
Opting out. Every email we send has an "Email preferences" link in its footer. It works without signing in and lets you stop all emails that aren't about your account security. You can also change this at any time with the "Email me about new questions and categories" setting on your Account page. If you opt out, you'll still receive account security emails.
What we record. We keep a record of the update emails we send you (which one and when) so that we don't send you the same one twice, and a record of your opt-out choice so that we respect it. We don't track whether you open our emails or click links in them.
5. Cookies
We use essential cookies to keep you signed in, and optional analytics cookies (only after you accept them via the cookie banner) to understand how the site is used.
6. Who We Share Data With
We never sell your personal data. We share it only with service providers who help us run Ambo MCQ, under contracts that require them to protect it: our website and database hosting provider, our email provider (for account security emails such as verification and password resets, and for the update emails described in section 4), our payment provider (for Pro subscriptions), and Google Analytics (only if you accept analytics cookies). We may also disclose data where required by law or to protect the safety of any person.
7. How Long We Keep Data
We keep your account, quiz history, friend connections, shared content, chat messages and the record of update emails sent to you for as long as your account exists. Sign-in records are kept for security purposes. If you ask us to delete your account, we'll delete or anonymise your personal data unless we need to keep some of it to meet a legal obligation, resolve a dispute, or deal with a report of abuse.
8. Your Rights
You have the right to access the personal data we hold about you, to have it corrected or deleted, to restrict or object to how we use it, and to receive a copy of it in a portable format. To use any of these rights, email privacy@ambomcq.ie. You also have the right to complain to the Data Protection Commission at dataprotection.ie (opens in a new tab).
9. Children
Ambo MCQ is not intended for anyone under 16, and we don't knowingly collect data from children under 16.
10. Security
We use encrypted connections (HTTPS), hash all passwords, and limit access to personal data. No online service can be completely secure, so please use a strong, unique password and keep it private.
11. Changes to This Policy
We may update this policy from time to time. If we make material changes, we'll let you know through the site or by email.
